Cannabis UNKNOWN: What the hell is THC?

Sure you may have consumed THC, but do you know what the hell it actually is?

Farm to table is all the rage these days. Some people even want to know the name of the cow that their steak was taken from. So why don’t we care as much about our cannabis? I mean, we all have heard of THC, but what the hell is it? Well, to answer that the first thing I need to do is get the boring science stuff out of the way. Ready? BREEEATHE!

THC is technically called Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannibinal and is a cannabinoid found within cannabis sativa, also known as marijuana, sticky icky, the chronic. THC is secreted through the tricomes of the cannabis plant and because of it’s strong antibacterial qualities, is thought to serve as the plants immune system. THC mimics a cannabinoid that is made naturally within your body called anandamide. It binds to receptors in your brain called your endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system regulates how we perceive time, movement, our appetite, and has been known to have positive effects on how we processl pain and deal with stresses like PTSD.

Okay that was the basic science, but what is THC to the average Joe?

Well, THC is much like what alcohol is to beer, wine and other spirits. THC is the fuel that gives cannabis its kick. But it’s far from the only factor that influences the plants effect on your brain. Now that more science is being done on cannabis, we know that there are around 100 other cannabinoids within cannabis that add to the effect as well as a mosaic of things called terpenes that do as well. But we’ll talk about those more in separate videos.

Because THC binds to receptors in the brain and everyone’s neural pathways are different, it can have differing effects on different people. But for most, the effect of straight THC is actually quite clear headed and alert.

However, while THC most often carries a very euphoric effect on the consumer, if taken in too high of a dose, THC has been known to create paranoia and or anxiety. But if you’re paranoid and anxious because you think you may have overdosed on THC, don’t worry. You literally can’t physically overdose on it. Relax…just chilllll…

For some, a high THC percentage is all they are after. That’s like drinking Everclear simply because it’s got the highest alcohol content. But if that’s what you are into bro, who am I to judge?

THC is a psychoactive compound that tends to increase your appetite and distort your perception of time. In fact, one time in college a friend and I sparked up and started chatting for what literally felt like half an hour, and when we paused for a breath we looked up and were floored because it’d only been five minutes. Needless to say, a 420 pound case of the giggles took over at that point. My cheeks hurt just thinking about it.

Finally, when THC is ingested through the liver, as it is when you eat an edible, it actually amplifies in strength and changes from Delta 9 to Delta 11. Which brings us to another point. THC requires heat to activate. So you can eat raw cannabis flower until you are blue in the face and it will not get you high. But beware the fiber in it may end you up in, well…

Do you like low or high THC strains? Tell me why in the comment section. And help me educate the masses. I’m Scojo The Herb Advisor.
